RESEARCH FOCUS AREAS

Research across the AIMS Network is driven by a vibrant community of Research Chairs, Lead Scientists, postdoctoral fellows and doctoral researchers drawn from Africa and around the world. Together, they advance frontier research in the mathematical sciences while strengthening Africa’s scientific leadership and global collaborations.

Our research spans a broad and interconnected set of themes, including mathematical modelling, stochastic analysis, differential equations, mathematical physics, data science, machine intelligence, optimisation, quantum science, and the modelling of climate and biological systems. These areas are unified by a strong focus on addressing real-world challenges, from public health and environmental sustainability to finance, technology and emerging quantum innovation.

Research Chairs, including those supported by prestigious international programmes such as the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, anchor long-term research agendas and foster cross-continental collaboration. Their work not only advances theoretical foundations but also translates mathematical insight into practical applications with societal impact.

Each AIMS Centre contributes uniquely to this collective research ecosystem. Through joint workshops, mobility programmes, collaborative grants and international partnerships, AIMS cultivates a pan-African research environment that is globally connected and locally relevant. This networked approach ensures that mathematical sciences research not only advances knowledge but also builds lasting scientific capacity across the continent.
