Michel Rwema’s inspiring journey from student to postdoctoral researcher highlights AIMS’ impact on African science leadership.

Michel Rwema grew up in Nyanza District in Rwanda’s Southern Province, where a strong interest in science took root early in his life. Raised in a family that valued education, he developed a particular strength in mathematics, which led him to G.S Kigeme, one of the schools in the region known for its focus on science. Supportive teachers and a nurturing environment helped strengthen his academic path. After completing secondary school with a focus on mathematics and physics, Michel went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the National University of Rwanda. He later taught the same subjects at high school level. That teaching experience deepened his curiosity and solidified his desire to continue learning, eventually leading him toward postgraduate studies. Michel’s journey took a transformative turn when a close friend introduced him to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). He applied and was admitted to join AIMS Cameroon in 2014, where he joined a pan-African cohort of promising scientists. His research at the time explored the cosmological constant in Einstein’s gravitational field equations using a supersymmetry approach. The collaborative academic setting, access to world-class lecturers, and practical research opportunities expanded his perspective and strengthened his commitment to leveraging mathematical sciences for real-world challenges, especially climate change. Inspired by this, he went on to pursue a master’s degree in Energy Policy at PAUWES in Algeria, before returning to AIMS; this time through the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) in Rwanda, where he joined the first cohort of PhD fellows in Climate Science. His PhD research bridged academic rigour with local relevance. His dissertation, Statistical Analysis of Climate Variability in Rwanda, offered insights with direct applications in national planning, agriculture, and climate adaptation. The program, jointly delivered with the University of Rwanda and LUT University in Finland, enabled Michel to grow as an independent researcher while benefiting from the collaborative supervision of local and international experts, including Dr. Mouhamadou Bamba Sylla, AIMS Network Research Chair in Climate Change Science. His joint PhD experience also positioned him to work across different academic cultures and research environments; skills he now applies in his current work. Michel is now back at AIMS—this time as a postdoctoral fellow in Climate Science at the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) in Kigali. He is part of a research project focused on improving the use of climate data in agro-ecological research. His role blends scientific research, project support, and mentorship of young scholars, something he is especially passionate about. Michel has published several peer-reviewed publications, with work spanning climate modelling, renewable energy policy, and sustainable development. His writing has contributed to ongoing discussions around climate resilience in Africa and beyond, and has been shared at international conferences where he continues to engage with the broader scientific community. Reflecting on his journey, Michel shares: “I have had the chance to learn from people who challenged and guided me, and I recognise that not everyone gets such opportunities. That understanding stays with me. It pushes me to make the most of what I have, and to use it in ways that can open doors for others. I remain committed to sharing what I have learned and contributing to Africa’s future in science.” Michel Rwema’s trajectory exemplifies the spirit of AIMS: training Africa’s next generation of scientific leaders by providing rigorous scientific training, international exposure, and a supportive research community, ultimately empowering scholars to drive positive change on the continent and beyond.
